The old GM's viable assets were sold out of bankruptcy to form General Motors Company, which emerged from bankruptcy in July 2009 just 40 days after the original bankruptcy filing. The U.S. government holds a 60.8% stake in the the company. The new GM will have just four core brands: Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick, and GMAC.
