This industry is one of the broadest, with companies as diverse as the uses people have found for the internet. The internet giants include familiar names like Google, Amazon, eBay, Yahoo! and Juniper Networks.

While Amazon is basically a large retail operation, the lack of a 'brick and mortar' store results in less overhead and thus higher profit margins than traditional retailers. Therefore, Amazon tracks with both retail stocks and the more volatile technology industry, as its 'store' is online. eBay provides both an online marketplace for buyers and sellers to meet, and also the platform for the resulting monetary transfer through its PayPal subsidiary. This 'marketplace' is all virtual, with low overhead and high margins.

But the internet isn't just retail. Google is not only the Web's dominant search engine but also its most effective advertising machine, selling ads around their doorway to finding information. Yahoo! competes against Google in search and owns various other online properties, but gains nearly ninety percent of their revenues from advertising. Juniper, meanwhile, sells the equipment that carries the internet's electronic data.

Most internet stocks trade on the tech-laden Nasdaq Exchange, and therefore trade along the more volatile indexes, like the Nasdaq 100.
Internet companies tend to have higher profit margins and, since the internet is piped directly into people's homes, these stocks are a bit less economically sensitive. However, they are not counter-cyclical in the true sense of that term. In slow economic times consumers are less likely to cancel their internet access as it has become viewed as a necessity, but internet users have come to expect content for free. Therefore, converting that audience to purchases or desired actions is not always simple.

The internet does save consumers money via both cheaper products at Amazon and eBay and not having to travel to a store, thus cushioning the downside for better-run companies. In good economic times, high profit margins and low overhead create solid earnings and can create strong upside moves. However, carving out a niche online is not easy due to barriers to entry are low and fierce competition.
