Technology companies are usually characterized by having low levels of debt and high profit margins. An industry that encompasses a large swath of the modern economy, it includes software companies like Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT); enterprise service firms like International Business Machines (NYSE: IBM); hardware companies like Cisco Systems, Inc. (NSDQ: CSCO) and Hewlett-Packard Company (NYSE: HPQ); chip makers Intel Corp. (NSDQ: INTC); internet giant Google (NSDQ: GOOG) and the ever-innovative Apple
(NSDQ: INTC); internet giant Google (NSDQ: GOOG) and the ever-innovative Apple Inc. (NSDQ: AAPL).

Intel carries a large debt load for a few reasons. First, the semiconductor business is capital intensive and competitive. Second, chips have become so common in the modern economy that semiconductors are considered a commodity. Microsoft and Google are the monsters of their markets, with Google controlling over 70% of the online search market and Microsoft dominant in the PC operating system business. Over the years, IBM has morphed from a PC- and chip- manufacturer into a company with 50% of its revenues coming from business and software services to corporate clients. Apple has emerged as the prime innovator of electronic consumer products with their iPod and iPhone.

Technology stocks are primarily traded on the Nasdaq exchange, and have one Achilles heal: technology evolves rapidly. Therefore, companies in this industry are constantly fighting to stay ahead of the curve, lest a new technology will emerge and leave them obsolete.
Tech companies hold lower levels of debt and usually carry high profit margins, making them more volatile both to the upside and downside of the market. In the latest economic downturn, the absence of debt and the cost to service such debt has left the tech companies stronger and more fiscally flexible. As a result, most have outperformed the general market.
